My eyes shot open. Neri’s shimmer glowed faintly in the corner of the room. She sat up and stretched toward me, opening her beak in a yawn. “Did you succeed in meeting your father’s dreams?”

“Not exactly.” My voice was hoarse, raw, as if I’d been screaming, as if I’d sang for my mother’s life…and failed.

Not a dream.

It had been real.

I held up my fist, the silver feather clenched tight inside, and slowly uncurled my fingers.

Neri flapped down from her perch and peered close at the feather. “I—I don’t understand.”

“My mother. I saw my mother.” I raised my gaze to meet Neri’s unblinking purple stare. “She died. I saw my mother die.” The words seemed like a paper cut-out of the truth. It couldn’t be true. Her death couldn’t be my fault.

“How…” Neri trailed off.

“She saw me. She talked to me. And then Colin…”

“What?” Neri slashed the word, straightening her spine.

But I couldn’t continue. It was too much. I fell back on my pillow, clutching my mother’s feather.

“Elpida. Korrina,” she corrected. “This is very important. Did Colin see you?”

I curled on my side. Didn’t answer. Didn’t want her to know what I’d done.

If I’d only listened…

“Korrina, how do you have that feather?” Neri asked, her voice softer, more gentle somehow.

“Colin did something to her, because I—I…” I couldn’t complete the thought. Couldn’t let Neri know that all of this…it was all because of me. I had caused this. Know me by my signs. Echidna’s earthquake, the tear in the veil, all just seventeen years after my mother died. Colin was coming to claim the scepter for Phorkys. Which I had already as good as given him.

Neri was talking, stomping around on my comforter. I wasn’t really paying attention, just catching a word here and there. “…manifesting the physical from a dream…impossible…not impossible…never heard of…”

I tuned her out.

Because a plan was forming. Not just get rid of my song, because that still had to happen. But I affected my entire life by dream walking. What if I could do it again? What if I could go back?

I could go back and change everything.

Save my mother, stop the tear, and keep Colin from ever coming for me and the people I love.

I sat up, ironclad certainty strengthening my spine.

“Colin didn’t see me,” I said.

Neri stopped pacing. “He didn’t?”

“No, just my mother.” Don’t worry, I can fix this.

“But you brought the feather back from the dreamworld. Korrina, that’s not supposed to be possible.”

“You said my voice was different. Guess my dream walking abilities are as well. Need a winning lottery ticket? I’m your girl.” I slapped a slipshod smile on my face. “Now if you don’t mind, I need to sleep. Growing teenager and all that.”

Neri bowed, and reluctantly shimmered out.

I fell back onto my pillow, feeling lighter than I had in days. Years.

I was going to fix this.

And then Luke? He was going to fix me.
